Diabetes insipidus (DI) occurs when the kidneys are unable to conserve water. The amount of water conserved is controlled by antidiuretic hormone, , (also called vasopressin) which is secreted by posterior lobe of pituitary gland. Diabetes insipidus is characterised by excessive urination and thirst, due to the increase in permeability of collecting tubules.
